Customizable Packages
NamibHub offers a wide variety of web hosting
services to suite every customers needs and
requirements. To kick of with we will only host managed web sites with
basic HTML, Javascript etc. support allowing us to test and successfully
implement more advanced server features. Clients can upload web pages
using Secure FTP.
While our server does already have more advanced capabilities, we cannot
support or gurantee that these will work as per expectation. Full web
hosting services and support will be made available once implemented and
better understood. To achive this we have to study different
technologies and programming languages to gain a better understanding.
We hope to implemented full web hosting support by 1 September 2010.
NB: Most web sites hosted in Namibia are not considered advanced
and therefore do not require advanced server features. This means your
web page will probably work.
Should you not find what you are looking for or need more
information, please contact us at info@namibhub.com. Our products are fully customizable which puts
us in a unique position to assist you with alternative solutions.
NamibHub bundles web and email hosting services with top level domain registration services
over which we do have 100% control.
It is our policy to respond to emails within 48 hours but we use a
triage based system which means that customers that need immediate
attention will be assisted much faster and sooner than problems
which are not deemed as critical.
Our
usual office hours are from 09:00-18:00 but this does not dictate our
working hours.
We typically assist as early and as late as we can and have
assisted clients as early as 07:00AM in the morning and as late as
00:00AM at night. NamibHub will implement a SMS or pager system which
can be used in the event of true emergencies. To avoid abuse, such a
system must be thought through thoroughly and is the reason we have not
yet implemented it.
It is NamibHubs policy to respond to emails within 18 working hours (Our
usual office hours are from 08:00-17:00 but you may receive
correspondence much earlier and later than that.) We have put auto-responders on
the above mentioned account ensuring that
you know that your email has arrived and will be attended to.

Bandwidth
NamibHub servers / services have a contention
ration of 1:1.
What this means is that every customer will receive 100%
of of his local bandwidth from our servers. Any bandwidth
limitations experienced locally are the result of international
routing and hops. A hop is the intermediate connection in a string
of connections linking two network devices. On the Internet, for
example, most data packets need to go through several routers before
they reach their final destination. Each time the packet is
forwarded to the next router, a hop occurs. The more hops, the
longer it takes for data to go from source to destination. You can
see how many hops it takes to get to another Internet hostby using
the "ping" or "traceroute (tracert in Windows)" utilities.
NamibHub does not impose any bandwidth
restriction but we do monitor this to avoid potential abuse.
Our servers presently run at 10 Megabyte/Second (Or
10,485,760 Megabit/Second). Actual bandwidth has been testted
confirmed at these speeds confirmed. Should you quetion this, feel
free to ask us for a demonstration. Network speeds will be upgraded
to 100 Megabytes per Second (Gigabit Speeds) when the need arises.
Under normal conditions, each client has access
to 10-20 Gigabyte/month
(or 10,485,760,000,000
- 20,971,520,000,000 bits/Month). This
is called band and essentially the amount of data that can be
transmitted in a fixed amount of time. For digital devices, the
bandwidth is usually expressed in bits per second(bps) or b per
second. For analog devices, the bandwidth is expressed in cycles per
second, or Hertz (Hz). Providing customers with all this bandwidth
does not suggest that we tollerate its abuse and clients actively
and obviously abusing our services will be suspended. NamibHub site
policies do apply.
Presently our email server can easily handle over 400 simultainous
email connections running at
256 Kilobit/Second (This is about 25 Kilobyte/Second). This
will be increased tenfold if and when required. Internet bandwidth
usage is logged on a daily basis to establish irregularities and
obvious abuse. Spam, pornography, terrorism and other offencive and
negative activities will not be tollerated.
Clients
are warned that local bandwidth is being influenced by
routing and International as well as local ISP
such as Telecom Namibia, MTC, MWEB etc.)
International bandwith especially effects services such as
IMAP
which heavily rely on the stability
and capability of the such services. It
should be noted that NamibHub ha no control over national or
initional bandwidth or connectivity and can therefore not be held
responsible. Namibia does not have the infrastructure for hosting
dedicated servers.
We hope that their will be significant
improvements when the West African Cable
System (WACS) is completed in 2011. Telecom Namibia
joined a global consortium, which, is busy building a $600-million cable system
to extend faster international connectivity to
countries in Africa at cheaper tariff. Lets hope
that things improve when this is in place. The network
is expected to be ready by 2011. The cable network
will cover South Africa, Namibia, Angola, the two Congos, Cameroon, Nigeria, Togo, Ghana and Cote
d’Ivoire in the African continent. The network will
also cover Cape Verde, Canary Islands in Atlantic
Ocean and Portugal and Britain in Europe.
resently most, if not all internet is routed through South Africa.
Personally we have tested our servers in Chicago at speeds of 10
Megabyte per seond fom and to the UK. As the new West African cable
system will terminate in the UK, this should bring much improved
speeds for our services, especially cince the route will be much
shoter in terms hops.
The contract for the 14,000 km cable network project
was awarded to Alcatel-Lucent Sumbarine Networks.
There are also several associated companies like
Angola Telecom, Broadband Infraco, Cable and
Wireless, MTN, Telecom Namibia and Portugal Telecom
and Tata Communications. The cable network project
is named the West African Cable System. The fibre
optic submarine network will provide 3.84 terabits
per second of bandwidth, with points of landing, or
global gateways in four countries.

Multi Protocol Support (POP,
IMAP, SMTP and WebMail)
POP -
Post Office Protocol (POP)
POP
is an application-layer Internet standard
protocol used by local e-mail clients to retrieve e-mail from a
remote server over a TCP/IP connection. POP and IMAP (Internet
Message Access Protocol) are the two most prevalent Internet
standard protocols for e-mail retrieval.
SMTP -
Simple Mail Transfer Protocol (SMTP)
SMTP
is an Internet standard for
electronic mail (e-mail) transmission across Internet Protocol (IP)
networks. While
electronic mail servers and other mail transfer agents use SMTP to
send and receive mail messages, user-level client mail applications
typically only use SMTP for sending messages to a mail server for
relaying.
IMAP -
Internet Message Access Protocol (commonly known as IMAP, and
previously called Internet Mail Access Protocol, Interactive Mail
Access Protocol, and Interim Mail Access Protocol)
IMAP
is an Application
Layer Internet protocol operating on port 143 that allows an e-mail
client to access e-mail on a remote mail server. The idea is pretty
much the same as Webmail without the burden of html interface. IMAP
supports both on-line and off-line modes of operation. E-mail
clients using IMAP generally leave messages on the server until the
user explicitly deletes them. This and other facets of IMAP
operation allow multiple clients to access the same mailbox.
Webmail (WorldClient)
- Webmail (or Web-based e-mail)
Webmail
is an e-mail service intended to be
primarily accessed via a web browser, as opposed to through a
desktop e-mail client (such as Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla's
Thunderbird, or Apple Inc.'s Mail). A major advantage of webmail
over application-based e-mail is that a user has the ability to
access their inbox from any Internet-connected computer around the
world. However, the need for Internet access is also a drawback, in
that one cannot access old messages when not connected to the
Internet.
-
SSL Encryption
Transport Layer Security (TLS) and its predecessor, Secure Sockets
Layer (SSL), are cryptographic protocols that provide security and
data integrity for communications over networks such as the
Internet. TLS and SSL encrypt the segments of network connections at
the Transport Layer end-to-end.
This is generally used by insitutions (i.e. banks,
credit card companies) requiring
security and privacy. The protocol is designed to prevent
eavesdropping, tampering and message forgery. NamiHub has ully
implemented SSL
encryption methods to ensure client email services, passwords
and data remain fully confidential when used from insecure locations such as
internet cafes, airports etc.
Cryptology protocols will not work with transparent proxy servers (Due to
end-end encryption) which ensures that internet backbone and service
providers cannot breach
our clients' privacy using transparent proxy servers and similar
technologies. To ensure privacy, clients should always ensure that
their browser indicates that their connection is encrypted which is
usually indicated with a lock. It should also be noted that while
our services are secure, those of other service providers are not.
-
Anti-Virus
Emails are scanned using some of the world’s
best rated and most
advanced anti-virus solutions. Anti-Virus software will be renewed
and reviewed at least once per annum to ensure best performance and
reliability. Presently we use, recommend and sell Bitdefender
Internet Security which is
rated amongst the very best.
Our IT company, Impulse Computer Services also
provides sales, services and support for all Bitdefender products
but we can justas well provide service and support for any other
product. These include but are not limited to Kasperski, Syamantec
or Norton Anti-Virus, Webroot Anti-Virus etc. As we don't specialize
in other products, extra import considerations (i.e. Transport) may
apply.
Over 20 years of inhouse IT experience (Starting in 1987 with
protection against Stoned Virus etc.) means that we have seen best
sellers come and go. We used to sell products from Mcafee, Webroot,
Symantec (Norton), Trend Micro etc. but in consideration of what is
best for us and our customers, we moved on and are presently using
Bitdefender.
While Bitdefender is excellent, no single solution can ever be 100%
effective. It remains customers responsibiliy to protect themselves
my not browsing websites considered as virus and malware havens etc.
and by not opening spam emails which clearly don't have the clients
best interests at heart.
Emails are scanned when they pass though the system. This means
customers can be ensured that emails
stored and passing though our system will
be clean of any malware and virusses. Existing emails which are kept
online are rescanned at regular interval using multiple
scanners. This allows us to find new and
unknown virusses and assess the effectiveness of our anti-virus
products.
NamibHubs site policy
reserves the right to remove emails or content containing
viruses, malware and spyware and
executable attachments (As these might be malicious).
-
Anti-SPAM
Emails that are considered possible spam
will be tagged. Emails
identified as definate SPAM will be removed.
SPAM is identified using a
combination of Heuristics and Bayesian scanning techniques. To
allow emails to pass freely, the recipient can forward emails listed
as SPAM as attachment to whitelist@usersdomain.xxx
("usersdomain.xxx" refers to your own domain on our server) which
will add the user into our servers white list, allowing it to pass
un-hindered in future.
Our server uses the following anti-spam techniques:
-
Bayesian spam filtering
Bayesian spam filtering uses techniques of
statistical e-mail filtering. Particular words have
particular probabilities of occurring in spam email
and in legitimate email. For instance, most email
users will frequently encounter the word "Viagra" in
spam email, but will seldom see it in other email.
The filter doesn't know these probabilities in
advance, and must first be trained so it can build
them up. To train the filter, the user (Our Client)
must manually indicate whether a new email is spam
or not. For all words in each training email, the
filter will adjust the probabilities that each word
will appear in spam or legitimate email in its
database. For instance, Bayesian spam filters will
typically have learned a very high spam probability
for the words "Viagra" and "refinance", but a very
low spam probability for words seen only in
legitimate email, such as the names of friends and
family members.
After training, the word probabilities (also known
as likelihood functions) are used to compute the
probability that an email with a particular set of
words in it belongs to either category. Each word in
the email contributes to the email's spam
probability, or only the most interesting words.
This contribution is called the posterior
probability and is computed using Bayes' theorem.
Then, the email's spam probability is computed over
all words in the email, and if the total exceeds a
certain threshold (say 95%), the filter will mark
the email as a spam. Email marked as spam can then
be automatically moved to a "Junk" email folder.
The initial training can usually be refined when
wrong judgments from the software are identified
(false positives or false negatives). That allows
the software to dynamically adapt to the ever
evolving nature of spam.
NamibHub combines the results of both Bayesian sand
heuristics (pre-defined rules about the contents,
looking at the message's envelope, etc.), resulting
in even higher filtering accuracy.
-
Heuristic Scoring Options
Heuristic scanning uses experience-based techniques
that help mail servers identify and solve the spam
problems by learning and discovery. The heuristic
method is used to rapidly come to a solution
(Detecting spam) that is hoped to be close to the
best possible answer (If a message is spam or not).
Heuristics are "rules of thumb", educated guesses,
intuitive judgments or simply common sense.
In more precise terms, heuristics stand for
strategies using readily accessible, though loosely
applicable, information to control problem solving.
Using a scoring system, our server accumulates a
score based on various criteria. Included in the
scoring system are black listings by various
Anti-SPAM Servers (Servers that confirm or deny a
DNS entry as found in the sender's address to be a
source of SPAM), reverse DNS lookups (See if a
Sender's email domain refers to the IP address
his/her email is coming from) etc. our server is not
forced to come to a conclusion based on single
criteria (i.e. one DNS Blacklist server saying it
is).
A message is spam if its score is greater or equal
to [XX] (0.0-500.0)
The value that we specify is the required spam
threshold that NamibHub will compare to each
message's spam score. Any message with a spam score
greater than or equal to this amount will be
considered spam, and then the appropriate actions
will be taken based on other Spam Filter settings.
If we have the spam score threshold set to 5 and the
rejection threshold set to 10, then any message with
a spam score that is greater than or equal to 5 but
less than 10 will be considered spam and handled
according to the rest of our spam filter settings.
Any message with a spam score greater than or equal
to 10 will be rejected by NamibHub during the
delivery process.

Backups
Our
server is being backed up on a daily basis using a some of
the most extreme, secure and highly
accurate Linux based backups systems
available to date.
Backups are made on our online servers
in Chicago, Illinois in the USA
(Allowing speedy and immediate recovery) but we do also keep
offline backups in Namibia. Backups to
Namibia are done using
SSL transport protocols and automation.
These services serve as preventative measure in case of a
server crash, virus attack, natural disaster etc. allowing us to
restore the server to the latest state or even move our
entire
infrastructure to another center on the Globe.
Backup are considered extremely important for us
and are one of our mayor selling points. NamibHub is
considering setting up a secondary
server system at a completely separate data centre and continent
which would allow us full redundancy in the event of a national
disaster at one of our data centers. An example of such an disaster
is an attack on the Trade Centers in Ne York now better known as
911. Hosting mirrored services a continent away ensures that no
single terrorist attack or natural disaster (i.e flooding,
hurricane) etc. should be able to bring our services to a
standstill.
Exact backups schedules will not be announced t promote
security. All we can say is that backups are done daily and that
these are highly reliable and secure.
NB: While NamibHub
does provide recovery services, these are not free unless the
recovery is a mistake of our own (i.e. Server Crash). Recovery will
be charged at N$150 per account per incident.
-
Content Filtering
Clients can set up their own content filters using the Webmail
(WorldClient) Interface.
We are also busy implement a "Frequently asked Question" section which
will explain to clients how to use some of these services. For clients
that want personal training, we offer our personal services though
Impulse Computer Services.
Content filtering allows our server to move, copy
and delete your email when it arrives based on user pre-defined rules.
Content filtering also works great in combination with folder sharing,
which is a feature that is very much unique to our services
All emails send by a specific user or from a specific domain
could be filtered into a specific folder etc.
WebMail clients can edit and use his/her own text or html compliant
email signature using the Webmail interface. This allows auto insertion
when a user writes a new email under his/her webmail.
-
Folder Creation
Users can create their own folders and sub-folders using IMAP or
Webmail interface. This allows users to sort email manually or by
using content filters which the user can control personally.
-
Folder, Contacts, Notes and Task Sharing
Our server
allows users to share data with other accounts on our server, even
between different hosted domains. This makes it extremely easy for
users to copy correspondence into a folder that is shared with other
users for reading and/or revision. Users that are given access to
shares can be restricted in terms of type of access (i.e Read Only,
Edit or Full Access) by the person that shares his/her facilities.
-
WebMail Plain Text and HTML message
composition
Clients can write Webmail in a way that is professional and
attractive using a fully functional HTML capable Webmail interface.
There is no need to use email client software to look professional.
Our WebMail provides you with all the necessary tools.
-
Spell Check / Dictionary
Our Webmail facilities allow you to do spell checking in a
variety of languages.
-
Domain Hosting, Registration and
Transfer
NamibHub has full capability to host, register and transfer
customer domains. We have formed and alliance with GoDaddy, which
serves as the largest ICANN accredited domain registrar in the
world. This puts us in the unique position to provide clients with
services at a level and rates that can be considered extreme good
value for money. Domain Registration and transfer fees will be
supplied on request.
Clients will by default be registered with full ownership over their
own domains, unlike some other domain registration services which we
have encountered in
Namibia.
We encourage companies to register their own domains which they can
then use in combination with our email and web hosting services. We
charge a one time fee for setting up our email server to accommodate
each domain. Using a individualized domain is considered more
professional than hosting and account under an ISP's name or as par
of one of the free services like HotMail, Yahoo, Google etc. and
means the client has full control over availability of email
accounts, aliases etc.
-
Problems Sending or
Receiving Emails
We are aware that many emails in Namibia get lost due to unknown
reasons. Unfortunately at such time their is no post office to
blame. Still it is very dissatisfying for customers to find out
their email never reached its destination without ever being able to
determine who is to blame
Our email server puts us in the unique position to trace exact cause
of problems due to its detailed logging system. Should you have
concerns about emails not arriving etc., you may feel free to to
email us to investigate the issue. It is important that you must
provide us with the sender's and destination email address(es),
subject, date and time an email was send allowing us to trace our
logs and establish what went wrong. Clients should note that we
handle thousands of emails every day which might make it extremely
problematic tracing problems without aforementioned information.
Queries should be send to
whereismydmail@namibhub.info. Clients should get a response
within 48 hours. We will work on the implementation of a automated
system if this is at all possible. Due to security, we cannot just
simple send out logs at will as that may put our server and services
at risk. Some of the information as listed in the example below has
also been altered to ensure the privacy of our the actual client as
well as the location of our mail queues.
